When Price, Place and Product are all the same, Public Relations (Promotion) will be the Key

When people are considering buying a new product, what will affect customers’ decision? In marketing theory, there are 4Ps (Price, Place, Product and Promotion) which are the principal elements in affecting costumers’ behaviour or response. What if there are two different products which are sold at an identical price in the same place, which are costumers most likely to choose? Branding becomes the key principle in influencing costumer's decision. More and more people will purchase a particular brand based on its reputation. Therefore, PR is becoming more and more important in every company.

Apple, one of the leading 3C brands around the world, produced a series of advertisements to promote its new laptop- Mac. In order to fight for the sales in 3C industry, Apple created a series of interesting advertisements to catch the public's attention. In this series, a good looking and young man with stylish clothes represents Mac, while an old-fashioned and stuffy man with a formal suit represents PC in contrast. This creates an obviously contrasting image of Mac and PC.

This is one of a series of Apple advertisements which illustrate some functions, while somewhat making a joke of PR.

I couldn’t help but admiring this series. Apparently Apple has done a SWOT analysis really well so that it can present its strengths completely, on the other hand, to reveal PC’s weaknesses. When Vista, Microsoft’s new system, came to the public, it had great impact on every PC user with a number of problems. Many PC users complain about the new system; Apple knows the situation and takes Microsoft’s weakness for thier opportunity to promote a new product.

Brand and image building have become one of the crucial strategies when a company attempt to sale and promote its products. Due to more and more people buying new products from a familiar brand which they trust, to remain customer’s loyalty and recruit new customer could be a long-term task for a PR team. It is tough but efficient.

  1. I really like your example, that video was very impressive!!
Branding is an interesting topic for me, how to build a value behind the name of the brand is a hard work, which is why brand PR became more important these days. Let’s face it, most of the customers care about money, practical, functional, and “fame”. When the price, place, and product are all the same, they will definitely choose what will make them look good, and the meaning of “good” relies on how BPR did their jobs, and what image and message did BPR send to the publics.
