PETA successfully overturning the underlying ethos of the Twilight saga

Christian Serratos, star of forthcoming Twilight film New Moon, poses naked in a forest, a forest which looks remarkably like one where you might find the odd vampire or werewolf, boldly claiming she would ‘rather go naked than wear fur’.

These may well be admirable sentiments, but as Marina Hyde of the Guardian pointed out (in one of the 116 related articles), the fact that the actress did this without studio approval ‘seems spectacularly unthinkable – and frankly all the more hilarious for that.’

The Twilight saga, written by Stephanie Meyer, has an underlying message that prenuptial sex is unadvisable which is much capitalised on by promoters, particularly in the US. Though all the sexual tension between the assortment of charaters including humans, vampires and werewolves may be hard to discern, what is clear is that one of the actresses posing naked in a poster remarkably similar to that of the film, is not what the studio bosses would be anywhere near happy about. But looking at this from the public relations point of view, PETA have done very well in hijacking the press coverage of one of the biggest films this year and extending their campaign by offering Twilight: New Moon cinema tickets as a competition prize. PETA 2 – the youth division of PETA - also (perhaps slightly bizarrely) honoured the first ‘Twilight’ film with the Libby Award in February of this year.

As of the 15th of November, the studio producing Twilight, Summit Entertainment, had not yet responded directly to PETA and Christian Serratos’s campaign.

This is just an amusing reminder that however many millions of pounds you throw at protecting an image, it can still be destroyed by the desire for a 19 year old to stand up (naked) for what she believes in.

  2. I think it would be slightly ironic if she were to play a werewolf in the film.
However, in all seriousness, I think it ashame that the studio should be upset at all. After all, she has just attracted a whole bunch of teenage boys to watch the film and perhaps pick up the book.
